On the border between Itteren and Bunde, the Geul flows into the Maas. Before 2008, the area near Itteren along the Maas was mainly a large agricultural area. After the floods of December 1993 and January 1995, the implementation of the Grensmaas project gained momentum. Since 2020, this Grensmaas project between Itteren and Voulwames has been completed and nothing more can be seen of the excavation activities; the Maas has regained its freedom.
