The exhibition 'Strikes & Punishment: miners in occupation and liberation' highlights two drastic periods during and just after the Second World War, in which the mines were both a place of resistance and of retribution. In the spring of 1943, the Dutch went on strike en masse as an expression of resistance during the April-May strikes. Miners also downed tools, with all the risks that entailed. After the liberation, the meaning of working underground changed once again. In the Limburg mines, where labour was urgently needed, people were put to work who during the war had collaborated with the occupier
