Basilica of Our Lady

Maastricht's oldest church, glowing with candles lit for 'Sterre der Zee'.

The fortress-like westwork of this basilica is over 900 years old. Locals still slip in to light a candle at the Star of the Sea chapel — one of the most atmospheric corners of the city, on one of its prettiest squares.
