Most visitors never make it past Valkenburg — their loss. Sittard's market square is one of the province's finest, ringed by 17th-century facades and unhurried terraces (buy the local 'moppen' biscuits). Add the gilded neo-Gothic basilica around the corner, a gentle hour with the deer at Kasteelpark Born, and finish on the Brunssummerheide, where late-summer heather turns the whole horizon purple.
